Ameen Rihani Organization
"In reading Ameen Rihani… I seem to have become absorbed to the point of forgetting my prejudice... and my envy of Mr. Rihani because he was permitted to enter many remote parts of Arabia which were barred to others."

.:2007 Rihani Scholarship Recipients

2007 was another year when many highly competent students have applied for the Ameen Rihani Scholarship award. In August 2007, the Ameen Rihani Scholarship Selection Committee announced the recipient of the Scholarship for the year. Applicants reside in 24 different U.S. states and came from varying backgrounds with Lebanese-Americans comprising the highest percentage, and the remaining spread among other Arab-Americans such as Palestinian, Egyptian, Jordanian, Syrian, Moroccan, Kuwaiti, and Yemeni.

The Scholarship Selection Committee is proud to announce that the winner of the $1,500 Ameen Rihani Scholarship for 2007 is Mukhtar Voss, an American of Moroccan descent from Columbus, GA.

The members of the Ameen Rihani Scholarship Selection Committee have always had to contend with the challenge of choosing a winner from among a list of highly qualified applicants. Mukhtar Voss has excelled in his academic work, and has shown a commitment to being a talented artist, an effective communicator, an eloquent writer, a gifted musician, a competitive athlete, and a student scholar. He is an individual who "always seems to put just a little something extra into everything he does that makes it unique to him - a calling card of sorts", says one of his teachers. In his role as President of the Model UN Club, he has developed a speaking ability that is evidenced by the fact that he was acknowledged as one of the best delegates in his committee in the 2005 Columbus State University Model United Nations Simulation. According to his English teacher, "To meet Mukhtar is to meet a true Renaissance Man". This teacher goes on to say that "Mediocrity is not part of his vocabulary. Mukhtar is a sponge, soaking up every bit of knowledge he can. I have rarely seen a student with such a hunger for learning".

Mukhtar has enjoyed a cumulative high school GPA of 3.8 on a 4.0 grading system. He has competed on the school tennis team, has played in the youth orchestra, and has contributed significantly to the newspaper staff. He is now enrolled at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he plans to pursue a degree in International Business. He has an appreciation for other languages and cultures and hopes to be able to create a link between his American culture, the Arab World, and other cultures. To this end, he has learned German and plans to learn Chinese and Spanish. Mukhtar would like to become a motivational speaker, and the Chief Executive Officer of an international company.

The Ameen Rihani Scholarship Committee extends its warms congratulations to Mukhtar!
